The Martin girls’ basketball team had two disappointing bits of news this week, but overcame them nonetheless to post an easy 51-19 victory Wednesday over West Michigan Aviation Academy.
One disappointing development was that the Lady Clippers’ top scorer, Faith Guritz, suffered a sprained ankle and is probably out of action for the rest of this week. The other disappointment was that the Associated Press ignored the Lady Clippers, who now stand at 5-0, in its first Class D poll of top girls’ basketball teams in Michigan.
No matter on the hardcourt Wednesday night, when Martin dispatched its aviator opponents, shooting out to a 15-5 at the end of the first quarter and enjoying a 28-12 cushion at the half.
Jaclyn Hildebrand paced the offensive effort with 15 points, including five of six free throw attempts. Natalie Yowler came up with her best game yet with 12 points and Kiaya Warner added 11. Briana Warner collected seven rebounds and came up with five steals defensively.
The was the Lady Clippers’ first action since the holiday break.
