The Martin girls’ varsity basketball team copped its second victory in as many outings this season Friday evening with a convincing 43-26 verdict over Coloma.
Coloma, however, defeated the Martin boys by a 50 to 41 in the nightcap.
The home-standing Lady Clippers were on top by only four points, 21-17, at halftime, but they widened the gap in the third and fourth quarters.
The Comets came out strong, grabbing a 13-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter, but Martin held them to only 13 more points in the latter three periods combined.
“We’re still working on knocking the rust off after only having one practice after our first game, but our second half propelled us to another victory,” coach Ben Schipper said. “I’m very proud of the adjustments we made defensively.”
Senior guard Bri Warner led the Lady Clippers with 15 points and Gracie Shettler followed with 10.
The boys’ squad had its season record evened at 1-1 with the loss.
“Coloma was definitely a better team tonight,” said coach Brad Moelker. “They were in attack mode right from the tip. We were able to match that in the first quarter, only down three at the end of it, but a bad second quarter really hurt us. After that we were down by just enough and every time we made a little run, they responded.”
