So this area has two undefeated girls’ varsity teams as they head into the holiday break.
The Martin girls beat Saugatuck Friday night, 60-41, to improve their overall record to 5-0. Wayland, meanwhile, is 6-0.
The Martin boys scored their first victory of the season in a 58-36 decision against Saugatuck.
First-year girls’ head coach Ben Schipper said, “Our shooting came alive tonight, as we hit eight three-pointers tonight, which was more than we’ve hit all season combined.”
Guard Jaclyn Hildebrand led the way with 22 points that included three threes. Gracie Shettler had a career high 13 points. Bri Warner had 8 on two threes, Freddie Elkins had 7 points and Kiaya Warner two three-pointers for six points.
The Lady Clippers will be on their home court Monday to take on Maple Valley and then will travel to Parchment Friday, Jan. 3.
For the boys, it was defense, especially in the first three quarter against Saugatuck. They led 18-5, 30-7 and 38-11 at the first three period stops.
“It was nice to get a win going into break,” coach Brad Moelker said. “Our other games had all been pretty close so it would have been frustrating going into break 0-4.
“Our defense in the first half was some of the best I have seen out of our squad.,” he added. “Our defense created a lot of transition opportunities, but it also just helped us keep our intensity for long periods of time.
Mitchell Jager had a great shooting night. He ended up with 18 points and a handful of rebounds as well.
“Obviously defense is a whole group effort but I thought Travis Thorne and Ethan Gillihan really stood out. Travis was constantly pressuring the ball, trying to make their players as uncomfortable as possible. Ethan had the task of defending a pretty dangerous post threat. He made every catch difficult and really limited his opportunities.”
Cayden Curry added 14 points, Collin Coburn 10, Ethan Gillihan 7 and Travis Thorne 5.
