The Martin girls; basketball team struggled mightily on offense in a 50-14 loss Tuesday night to Kalamazoo Christian.
The Clipper guys lost as well, 54-49 to Grand Rapids Sacred Heart. The boys now are 3-11 for the season and Sacred Heart is 8-4.
The Lady Clippers scored only two points in the first quarter and one in the fourth.
Coach Ben Scnhipper said, “We started out strong defensively, holding them scoreless for about the first 3:30. Unfortunately, they also held us scoreless during that time and we weren’t able to capitalize on our great defense and get out to an early lead which would have been huge for our confidence and energy.
“K Christian always plays really solid defense against us and disrupts our offensive rhythm. We just couldn’t get into anything offensively, so any shot opportunity you see becomes desperate and then you’re shooting, hoping it goes in rather than just shooting with a clear mind.”
Torryn Harris scored four points and Anna and Avery Jager and and Maribeth Ritchie each had three.
“We liked Torryn’s activity level in this game offensively and defensively,” Schipper said. “We’ll continue to work on getting to the rim. We have to find a way to get there to put pressure on the defense and get to the free throw line. We can’t keep ending games with such a free throw discrepancy.”
He said the gap in free throw attempts was 20-6.
“It’s been like that all season because we’re not being the aggressor,” the coach added. “We’re going to move on from this game and prepare for a tough divisional matchup with Saugatuck Friday.”
Martin’s ladies are 4-8 for the season.
