The Martin girls’ basketball team barely turned away an upset bid by Galesburg-Augusta Friday night, prevailing 40-39.
Actually, perhaps it wouldn’t have been an upset because the Rams came within three points earlier in the season when they met in Galesburg. The win lifted the Martin girls’ overall season record to 12-5.
The Clipper boys’ squad, basking in the glow of their first win of the season last Tuesday, dropped a 59-37 decision to Galesburg-Augusta.
The Lady Clippers had to come up with some last-minute heroics to pull their game out of the fire. They were down 39-35 with just 51 seconds showing on the clock. Liz Reinke netted one free throw, Torryn Harris swished a pair at the charity stripe and then Martin regained possession on an in-bounds turnover and called time to draw up an in-bounds play. Avery Jager then dropped in the game winner with 16 seconds left.
Martin led throughout most of the ballgame, by 10 points, 25-15 at halftime, before Galesburg staged a late rally to take that four-point lead.
Makala Goddard returned to her customary double-digit scoring with 14 points and Macey Thorne drilled three threes to post nine points.
