The Hopkins softball team dropped a 2-0 heartbreaker Wednesday to perennial O-K Silver Conference champion Calvin Christian and then dropped another tight contest, 3-2, in the nightcap.
The Viking baseball team, meanwhile, had its ballgame with the Squires suspended on account of darkness after they played seven innings to a 6-6 deadlock.
Hailey Burch threw all seven innings in the first game for the Lady Vikings. She gave up only 4 hits, had 1 strikeout, one walk and one hit bitter. One of the two Calvin Christian runs was unearned. The Squires scored both in the top of the last inning.
“Hopkins struggled at the plate and had 9 K,” said coach Casey Schoenborn. “We just couldn’t string anything together.”
Calvin Christian’s pitcher only gave up 3 hits but had 9 Ks, and 1 BB
“No one from Calvin had any big hits,” said Schoenborn. “In the top of the seventh, Hopkins started off with an error, then gave up a single, then hit a batter and an error to give up one, then a passed ball to give up the second run.”
Morgan Fifelski pitched 6 innings in the second game, giving up four hits and one run, and had four walks. Hailey Burch pitched 1 inning in relief and gave up 4 hits and 2 runs. The Vikings rallied for two runs in the bottom of the final inning, but came up one run short.
The Lady Vikings’ overall record slipped to 8-4 with the sweep.
