The Hopkins girls’ varsity track team continues to tear up the competition in the early season, with a 4-0 dual meet record overall and the Watervliet Relays championship to its credit.

The Lady Vikings Tuesday defeated O-K Silver Conference opponents Calvin Christian 82-54 and Wyoming Godwin Heights 92-40 in a home double dual meet.

The boys came only three points shy of defeating Calvin Christian in a 70-67 loss and dropped an 82-54 decision to Godwin.

If the Hopkins girls can get by Kelloggsville Thursday and beat Northpointe Christian in a makeup, they’ll be in the driver’s seat for yet another league championship.

They scored big in the hurdles and sprints against Calvin Christian. Senior Britney Houseman won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes and freshman sensation Lauren Brown turned in two firsts in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles. Houseman covered the 200 in 26.6 seconds.

Supporting performances by Savannah Emaus and Anna Washburn gave the Lady Vikings a sweep in the 100, by Olivia Berry and Maddie Bockheim in 100 hurdles and Leonie Riebel in the 300 did the same.

However, in the relays, usually a strong suit for Hopkins, they won only two of the four, taking the 800 with Houseman, Cassidy Finney, Washburn and Laura Velderman in just under two minutes and 400 with Houseman, Emaus, Washburn and Hannah Crouch in 55 seconds.

The Squires unveiled a fabulous freshman in Catherine Kortman, who even edged Velderman in the open 400. They also dominated distance events, with sophomore Olivia Quillan running a 2:20.4 in the 800 and sweeping the 3200.

Emaus won the long jump at 14-6 and Brown was runner-up and Emaus won the pole vault at 7-6. Meghan Schulz and Shannon Henshaw went 1-2 in the throws.

Jasmine Fisher, Emma Helder, Gracie DeZeeuw and Alyssa Beilby won the 3200 relay against Godwin. Fisher took the 1600 and 3200, Velderman the 400, Helder the 800, and the 1600 relay with Finney, DeZeeuw, Helder and Brown.

The Viking boys got winning performances from Grey Castello, Brady Bockheim, Trey Collins and Joseph Bala in the 400 relay; Dan Rausch in the 400 (54.4); the 1600 relay with Rausch, Bockheim, Jacob Pastoor and Castello; Collins in the long jump; Collins in the pole vault at 11-0; a sweep in the shot with Nathan Roberts (43-4), Jake Cleypool and Ben Roberts; Roberts in the discus.
