Lady Vikings earn 1st win; guys take season opener

Both the Hopkins girls’ and boys’ basketball teams emerged victorious in non-league encounters Tuesday evening.

The girls, who have been saddled with a rugged early season schedule, picked up one in the win column with a 36-33 victory over Forest Hills Central on the road. The Lady Vikings had the misfortune of losing to Hamilton by three points and then. getting caught in a buzz saw last Friday night against undefeated Wayland.

The Viking boys had a successful season opener in taking out visiting Grand River Prep, 60-45.

Coach Jake Jewett said, “Leading most of the way, we had to battle a late run by GR Prep. in the fourth quarter to pull away and win by 15. It was an ugly game, but we’ll take it.

Three Hopkins players finished in double figures: Jayden Prather, 10 points; Micah Estelle, 13 points, and Tristen Perry – 12 points. 

The guys will play Friday night at Wayland. Meanwhile the girls will be on the home court to entertain Covenant Christian.
