The good news about Hopkins Monday night was that the Lady Vikings girls’ basketball team scored a mild upset victory over South Haven in its Class B district basketball tournament opener Monday night at Paw Paw.
The bad news was that now Hopkins again must face undefeated Plainwell in the second round Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. The Trojans, 20-0 this season, manhandled the Vikings last month in a non-league encounter, so the task ahead appears to be difficult.
Yet it must be understood that this Hopkins ballclub has come up with a few surprises this season, giving quality teams a competitive scare. And Monday night’s effort may have produced the squad’s biggest win of the season thus far.
South Haven came into the contest with a 10-10 overall record and Hopkins was only 6-14.
The Lady Vikings wasted little time in taking command, jumping out to an 11-7 lead after the first quarter and leading 23-14 at intermission. They were up by double digits, 32-19, at the end of three periods.
Ellen Bregg scored 15 points to lead Hopkins and Allie DeBoer added eight.
Bobbie Goodwin and Megan Sollman both tallied 14 for the Rams.
