The Hopkins girls’ varsity basketball team will wrap up its regular season Thursday at Covenant Christian, taking a 12-7 overall record into the ballgame.
The Lady Vikings, who finished the O-K Silver Conference last week in second place with an 8-2 mark, have split in a couple of non-league contests Monday and Tuesday this week. They came from behind Monday to beat Saugatuck 56-53, but dropped a 59-48 decision Tuesday at home against Grand Rapids West Catholic.
Hopkins fell behind in the early going, but rallied to tie the score in the third quarter. The Falcons, behind some quality outside shooting, were able to pull away after that.
Senior point guard Kennedy Helderop led all scorers with 29 points and freshman Lexi Teunissen added nine.
On Monday evening, the Lady Vikings fell behind 34-29 at the half, “but used a solid man-to-man defense to mount a comeback in the second half,” according to coach John Robinson.
Kennedy Helderop, the only senior on the squad, scored 26 points to pace the Hopkins offense, and the coach had high praise for the defensive efforts of Paris Corneille.
Hopkins will start Division 2 district play at 5:30 p.m. Monday against host Hudsonville Unity Christian.
