The Hopkins girls’ varsity basketball team is undefeated since the holiday break.
The Lady Vikings pulled out a 55-49 thriller Friday night over Grandville Calvin Christian to claim their sixth straight victory and push their overall season record to 7-4. Coach John Robinson’s group was last defeated in December by a Hamilton team that now is unbeaten at 14-0 and among the top Class B teams in the state.
Even more interesting is that Hopkins now has a 5-0 record in the O-K Silver Conference, trailing only NorthPointe Christian in the league standings. A home makeup contest Saturday at 1 p.m. against Kelloggsville will provide an important clue because the Rockets are in third place in the Silver and own an 8-4 overall mark.
The Lady Vikings got out to a big lead in the first quarter but the Squires battled back in the second, and Hopkins was clinging to a 26-24 when the two teams went into the locker room at intermission.
The leads went back and forth in the second half and regulation ended with a 46–46 deadlock. The Lady Vikings were able to gain the advantage in overtime 9-3 to seal the victory.
Eight Vikings cracked the scoring column. Olivia Sebright and Kennedy Helderop had 13 points apiece to pace the offensive attack. Maya Kerber contributed nine points and Sam Sebright added eight.
