The Wayland girls’ varsity bowling team finally tasted defeat Tuesday in Hudsonville against Unity Christian, 18-12, but rebounded the following day to take out Grand Rapids Catholic Central, 27.5 to 2.5.
The verdicts left the Lady Wildcats with a season record of 12-1.
The match against Unity Christian was close all afternoon. Wayland lost the first Baker game by two pins in a game in which it had three splits. The ‘Cats won the second Baker game by one pin but had five bad open frames, thereby losing the two extra points and trailed 6-4.
Unity got hot the first team game, shooting 100 pins over its team average and taking the game 881-838 and 7 of the 9 points. The Crusaders continue their hot bowling with a team total 70 pins over their average in the second game. However, the Lady Wildcats where able to pull out the win 863-848, but lost total by 28 pins overall and only managed to take six of the last 11 points.
“All told, we lost Baker total by one pin and team total by 28 pins,” explained coach Bill Holbrook. “That is three missed spares. We didn’t bowl bad. We bowled our average. They just got hot, shot spares better than we did and we had no answer.”
It was a competitive match and came down to the wire. Sophomore Sydney Urben paced the Lady Wildcats firing a 201-234=435.
It was was a different story Wednesday at Park Center Lanes. The scores were down a bit because the team in general struggled with the oil pattern.
The Lady Wildcats’ Baker games were much better, as they took all 10 points with 160-111 win and 193-120 win. They continued to dominate by taking 7.5 of 9 points with a 741-593 win. The second game was more of the same, taking all 10 of the 11 remaining points by a score of 738-553.
Leading the way for the Lady Wildcats was Junior Alicia Sweeney 199-161=360.
The Lady Wildcats now stand at 12-1 overall and 8-1 in conference play. Thursday wraps up a busy three days with their third straight away match at Spectrum Lanes against South Christian
