A subpar performance Thursday cost the Wayland girls’ varsity bowling team a league dual match encounter with Hudsonville Unity Christian, 17-13.
The Lady Wildcats came out and won both of the Baker Games 133-111 and 158-135 to take an early 10-0 lead. Unfortunately, a combination of the Lady Wildcats’ worst individual game of the season and Unity Christian’s best led to an 884-702 loss, as well as losing 7 of 9 points. Still up 12-9, the young Lady Wildcats improved in their second individual game, but were still bested by a good, experienced team and were only able to earn one of the final 11 points, losing 817-782.
The team was led by freshmen Sydney Urben (183-166=349), sophomore Alicia Sweeney (157-164=321), freshmen Marissa Bruinsslot (166-147=313) and junior Lizzy Cobb (177).
“This was a tough match, a tough loss that the girls really wanted to win,” said coach Bill Holbrook. “As with any match, there were positives and negatives. Tonight it was great to see the ladies bounce back from a terrible first game and continue to compete to the end regardless of the outcome.
“As we talk about often, you can only control what you do in this sport and the ladies are getting much better at competing to the very end for every pin they can get. With that mindset, they will win many more matches than they will lose and given the youth of this team (two freshmen, one sophomore and two juniors) their potential is limitless and dictated by their work ethic. My expectations for this group continues to rise.”
The Wildcat boys’ team defeated Unity Christian, 22-8. Cam Hetzilmen rolled a 209 and 210 for a 419 two-game series.
Next up is a home match Friday vs Hopkins.
