Lady Wildcat harriers bounce back to take 2nd in invitational

Perry Carter 9-15Zoe Antel 9-9The Lady Wildcats cross-country team bounced back nicely Saturday from a somewhat disappointing outing last Wednesday in an O-K Gold Conference jamboree.

Wayland came in second in the Cedar Springs Invitational, with 53 points. O-K Silver Conference power Grandville Calvin Christian won with 26.

The girls had finished fourth in the latest league jamboree. They now habe won one invitational and finished second twice this season.

The boys’ squad finished fifth in the same meet with 88 points while Calvin Christian won that meet as well.

Freshman Zoe Antel led the Wayland girls by taking fifth place in 21:18.63, and senior Mackenzy Kasper, who has been coming on strong of late, was right behind her in sixth at 21:20.07.

Wayland claimed 13th through 16th places, but only the top five harriers are scored. Freshman Payton Sidebotham was 13th was 13th in 21:48.29, sophomore Maggie Whitney 14th in 21:54.17 and junior Emily Isenhoff rounded out the scoring by taking 15th in 21:54.51, just three-tenths of a second behind Whitney.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Paul was 16th in 21:57.03, a sub-par performance for her, as she usually comes in first or second for the team. Though Paul is a sophomore, this is her first year running competitively.

Senior Perry Carter had another good day in leading the Wildcat boys. He finished third in 17:08.34. Jonathan Zuiderveen was 13th in 17:41.05, Owen Glass 17th in 17:55.75, freshman Caleb Pletcher 27th in 18:29.90 and Derek Huffman 28th in 18:31.02.
