The Wayland junior varsity girls’ basketball team won the championship trophy in the junior varsity division of the Cornerstone Holiday Tournament Wednesday by defeating Grand Rapids Christian 50-40 in the title game.
The Lady Wildcats had a great first quarter against the Eagles as they converted their defensive efforts into a 16 to 4 lead. The Wildcats led 28-18 at halftime. After halftime, the Wildcats slowed Grand Rapids Christian down by allowing only eight third quarter points.
The Wildcats gave some momentum back to the Eagles in the beginning of the fourth quarter. However, the Wildcats were able to take command of the game with good defense, ball control and smart decision making, according to coach Coralie Miller.
Points per player – combining the two Cornerstone University Tournament games:
were Abby Merice 9, Skylar Stora 16,Abby Omness (injured during the first tournament game) 2, Jaznae Randall 14, Brandalyn Helderop 16, Kennedy Helderop 16, Mari Biondo 8, Macey Winger 2, Chloe Coughlin 20 and Sam Nieuwkoop 23.
