Wayland High School junior Olivia Barabas Saturday morning qualified for next week’s Division 2 state cross-country championship by placing seventh in the regionals at Portage.

Barabas, who also qualified for the state meet a year ago and in her freshman year, checked in with a time of 20:05.19 over the five-kilometer course.

The Wayland girls’ team finished eighth in the team competition that included 17 schools. Marshall won with 56 points and Mason was runner-up with 63. South Christian was third with 75 and Middleville Thornapple Kellogg fourth with 117. Wayland had 249.

Sophomore Elliot Antel was 35th, senior Hannah Smith 45th, junior Emily Tuinstra 74th and junior Ruby Sidebotham 88th.

Barabas will run next Saturday afternoon at Michigan International Speedway near Brooklyn.
