Lady Wildcat softball team has 4-4 overall record thus far

The defending state champion Wayland varsity softball team is 4-4 on the season thus far.

The Lady Wildcats were swept in their nonleague season opener at Byron Center, 9-2 and 19-9. They won two of four encounters in a tournament Saturday, beating Alma 5-4 and Coopersville 4-2, but lost 5-4 to Spring Lake and 10-6 to Allendale.

Wayland opened its O-K Gold Conference season Wednesday by sweeping Middleville Thornapple Kellogg 18-4 and 14-4, both five-inning games.
