The Wayland girls’ bowling team scored its second victory in as many tries and in as many days Tuesday with a 21-9 triumph over Middleville Thornapple Kellogg.
The boys’ team, however, dropped a close match with TK to fall to 0-2.
The Lady Wildcats jumped ahead right from the beginning taking the baker games 8-2 (the second match was a tie).
Match one was swept by Wayland, featuring Breanna Hyde 174, Haven Baker 145, Madison Bottrall 136, Izzy Botwinski 171 and Kadence Bottrall 183. Wayland had 809 pins to TK’s 589.
In the second match the ‘Cats only needed one single point to win, so new bowlers got their first varsity experience with Lily Keech, Jasmine Ortiz, Summer Morrison and Juliette Chapelain having tons of fun.
Our first conference match was against Thornapple-Kellogg this afternoon and we faced an all senior team. Our boys fought hard but came up short. We were still in the match until the last frame and only lost by 30 pins.
The boys’ defeat was a close one until near the end. They lost the first baker game, which coach Sherry Mikliusicak said is usually the tough one at a different house (Hastings Bowl) lost by 23 pins (just two spares short).
The Wildcats bounced back in the second baker with a 180 and had plenty of extra pins to take the lead, 6-4.
Aydin Tolliver led game one for Wayland with a nice 193 game, Stephen Harnish had a 175. Chandler Caruso and Jayse Henkel had a combined score of 176. Chandler went out due to an injury and Jayse came in to finish the game. Wayland a combined 830, which is usually pretty decent but it wasn’t enough to take out TK. The ‘Cats were down 13-6 and still had a chance to come back.
The boys tried hard and came to within 30 pins, but just came up short. Aydin Tolliver rolled a team leading 178, Stephen Harnish 168, Will Dewing 167, and Kyle VanEss 162.
“We will be ready for TK when they come to our house (Rock ‘N Bowl),” promised Miklusicak.
