The Wayland girls’ varsity bowling team finished third in the 18-team Jenison Invitational Saturday, while the boys rolled their best two-game series of the season to start the morning, with eight of the first ten rolls strikes.

The Lady Wildcats came up with games of 809 and 765, taking them to the step-ladder finals. Baker games were 163, 148, 173, 179, 154, and 133. Also qualifying was Senior Bella Harnish as she medaled for fourth place in the individual portion.

“She has a great tournament presence this year!” exclaimed coach Eric Bottrall.

In the first ladder round, Wayland took on Jenison and was up by 84 pins (188 to 104) after Baker game one of two games. Jenison fired back with a great game of 171 to the Wildcats’ 131, but they were able to hold on to win with a total of 319-275.

The next rung of the ladder was against Hudsonville, which went on to win the tournament. The Eagles won the first Baker 147-122. and in the second 189-167.

On the boys’ side, senior Mark Musgrave rolled 158 and 187, senior Stephen Harnish 203 and 194, freshman Ashton Kasprowicz 189 and 146, freshman Kyle VanEss 149, and junior Chandler Caruso 195 and 181.

Seniors Carson Beck and Juan Rodriguez also contributed. Game one was a total of 875 and game two was an 857.

“We were 13th out of 20 teams at this point, and the spread was tight,” said coach Sherry Miklusicak. “Not many pins separated the field.

“Next up were six Baker games. I was happy with the first game 189, which was followed by a 138 and 146. Those last two probably didn’t help us, as we dropped to 15th.”

The last trio of Bakers were 165, 157 and 118.

The coach added that there was a bit of excitement down the lanes, as Forest Hills Northern rolled a 300 Baker game.

“Our ‘Freshies’ really stepped up and helped the team today,” Miklusicak said. “We have plenty more waiting for their turn!”

The Wildcat boys’ and girls’ teams will be off to Rockford Lanes Monday to face the “Let’s Go” team from Cedar Springs.
