Lady ‘Cats beat neighbor Hopkins 56-33 to go 2-0

The Wayland girls’ varsity basketball team improved its overall season record to 2-0 with a 56-33 victory at Hopkins Friday evening.

The Vikings threw a scare into Wayland in the first quarter, but the visiting quintet took control in the second period to grab a 21-19 advantage at intermission and then held Hopkins scoreless through the entire third quarter. to lead 35-19.

Sophomore Harmony Laker scored 21 points, including all seven of her free throw attempts to lead the ‘Cats. Senior guard Mady Terry chipped in nine points and Taylor Lyon and Izzy Johnson both drilled a couple of three-pointers and finished with eight points.

For the Vikings, Mady Weber dropped in 14 points and Flannery Johnston added 10.

It marked the second straight time the Lady Wildcats have won by margin in double figures after a 64-47 triumph Tuesday night over Forest Hills Northern. Howeever, it also was the second time they started slowly and then turned on the jets in the second half.

They will travel to Caledonia for their next game Tuesday night.

The loss dropped Hopkins to 0-2 overall. The Vikings lost by only three to a Hamilton team that had a merry romp Friday night over Traverse City West. They will be at Forest Hills Central next Tuesday evening.
