The Wayland girls’ soccer team claimed its second O-K Gold Conference victory this week with a 1-0 squeaker over Hastings.
The victory, only 24 hours after the Lady Wildcats upset Grand Rapids Catholic Central, pushed coach Ben Sleeman’s group to a 6-4-1 overall record and 3-3 in league play.
Sleeman said Wayland “managed to dominate possession and scoring chances, but ended with a narrow 1-0 win against a scrappy Hastings team.”
Indeed, goalkeeper Hannah Anderson only had to make two saves in posting the shutout while the Saxon goalie stopped 16 of 17 shots.
Wayland took the lead on a goal by sophomore Ashlyn Schafer on a nice assist from junior Haley Thelen.
“That was all the girls needed, as they continued to press and attack the visiting team and play strong defense until the final whistle,” the coach commented.
The win brings their record to 6-4-1 and their conference record to 3-2.
The Lady Wildcats will play at the Comstock Park Invitational Saturday with games at 10 a.m. vs Zeeland West, 12:30 p.m. vs Big Rapids and 1:45 vs Comstock Park.
Wayland will continue its conference schedule with a road game against South Christian Monday evening.
