The Wayland High School softball team won two of three encounters in the Wayland Invitational Saturday.
The Wildcats blanked previously unbeaten Big Rapids 2-0 in the first game, bested Caledonia 8-1 in game two and then absorbed an 11-6 loss in the finale.
Sophomore ace hurler Harmony Laker was the big story in the day’s opener, throwing a shutout and scattering six hits. She again didn’t walk anybody and struck out four hitters.
Wayland scored the game’s only two runs in the third inning. Freshman Madi Ludema came through with a two-run single.
Ludema and Rae Stallard both had a couple of hits.
Ludema came back in the second game to check Caledonia on just five hits, walking two and striking out three.
Liberty Laker, Izzy Johnson and Rae Stallard each stroked a double and the ‘Cats collected 14 hits in all. Johnson and Laker both finished with three hits and Reese Veltman and Ludema had two.
Veltman and Liberty Laker both cracked a double and Harmony Laker belted a triple among her three hits and she drove in a couple of runs.
The Wildcats now have an overall record of 15-7 and they remain unbeaten in O-K Gold Conference play.
However, things went south in the nightcap. Unity Christian unloaded an offensive attack with 18 hits, 10 off Carli Miklusicak in five innings and eight off Ludema in two frames.
