The Wayland varsity softball team improved its overall season record to 8-0 Monday with a sweep of a doubleheader at Middleville Thornapple Kellogg.

The Lady Wildcats, 4-0 in the O-K Gold Conference and fresh from the championship in the Grand Slam tourney in Muskegon, won by 16-0 and 16-1 scores.

Southpaw Abby Merice pitched a complete game shutout in the first game, only allowing two hits and striking out 9.

Leading the Wildcats offensively were Bethany Teunissen – 2-3 with a double and two ru8ns batted in; Chanlyn Commons – 1-2 with a double and an RBI; Hannah Sikkema – 1-2 with 2 walks and four RBIs; Chloe Coughlin – 1-1 with an RBI, and Skylar Stora – 1-2 with two RBIs.

Lauren McCulligh pitched a complete game in the nightcap, allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out five.

Leading the Wildcats offensively were: Merice – 3-3 with three doubles, a walk and an RBI; Taryn Coughlin – 1-1 with an RBI; Hunter Fenton – 1-1 with and RBI, and McCulligh – 3-3 with a home run and four RBIs.

The Wildcats will return to action Thursday, April 20, in a nonleague doubleheader at Jenison.
