Despite their youth, freshmen Ava Makowski of Wayland sophomore teammate Olivia Barabas and Helena Kerber of Hopkins went 3-4-5 in the annual Allegan County cross-country meet Tuesday at the U.S.-131 Motorsports Park.

Unfortunately, their teams, Wayland, Hopkins and Martin, settled for 4-5-6 in the team standings. The Lady Wildcats had 63 points, just missing third place by a point, Hopkins had 123 and Martin 153. The Lady ‘Cats were only 11 points away from first place.

Wayland boys finished fifth and Martin’s guys sixth. Otsego won the boys’ competition with 39 points and Hamilton took the girls’ meet with 52.

Makowski finished in 20:42.03, about a second and a half faster than teammate Barabas. Kerber’s time was 21:04.39.

Rounding out the Wayland scoring were freshman Elliot Antel in 17th, junior Hannah Smith in 21st and sophomore Emma Thayer in 30th. For Hopkins, it was sophomore Neveah Helderop in 24th, freshman Abigail Zalis 28th, Maddi Houseman 47th and MaKenna Pendock 49th.

Mercedes Morin lef Martin with a 25th-place finish, Aiala Zamanillo 36th, Zoie Tuinstra 37th, Chloe Billington 41st and Amy Harris 43rd.

Freshman Isaac Dyer continued his sensational running by placing 10th with a five-kilometer time of 18:14.06 and sophomore teammate Travis Koon was right behind him in 11th at 18:42.82. Freshman Casey Jansen was 25th sophomore Devin Weaver 30th and freshman Cainon Fenn 38th.

Carsen Young led Martin in 28th with a time of 19:32.08, Eli Dykstra was 39th, James Blackburn 41st, Kyle Pallett 42nd and Malakai Vanvolkinburg 59th.

Adam Ball was 40th for Hopkins, Caleb Beilby 52nd. Zachary Wisser 67th and Dean Heiden 68th.
