The Wayland girls’ varsity basketball team suffered its third loss in its last four starts Friday evening in a 54-39 decision at South Christian.
The Lady Wildcats, after an 8-0 start to the season, now are 9-3 overall and 2-3 in the O-K Gold Conference. South Christian now is 5-5 overall.
A terrible second quarter made the difference, as the Sailors outgunned Wayland 19-8 to mount a 31-16 advantage at intermission. The ‘Cats after that were unable to penetrate much inside its double digit deficit.
Junior pivot Stephanie Ainsworth was held to 13 points and junior guard Parrish Hudson had 10, including a couple of threes. None of their teammates scored as many as five points.
The Wayland boys’ squad lost 50-40 to South Christian to fall to 0-10 on the season overall.
The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats will play at Grand Rapids Christian Tuesday evening.
