Lady Wildcats lose despite solid defensive effort

Wayland girls’ varsity soccer coach Ben Sleeman maintained his team played well defensively, but lost 3-0 Thursday evening to perennial O-K Gold Conference power South Christian.

“Despite playing arguably their best defensive game of the young season, the visiting Wildcats were defeated by the Sailors,” he said.

The score at halftime was 1-0 with Wayland seeing few opportunities to score, but limiting the Sailors’ offense to only six shots and the one goal. The second half was much the same with the Wildcat defense standing firm against waves of Sailors and a long strike on a failed clearance and a goal with 15 seconds remaining in the game were the deciding factors in the game.

Wayland goalkeeper Lilly Bolliger made three saves in the contest.

The Lady Wildcats, now 0-3 overall and 0-2 in league play, have a busy week next week with three games and hope to find their first win of the season Monday when they travel to Zeeland West. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 6:45 p.m.
