The Wayland girls’ soccer team lost for the second time this season, 5-0 Monday evening to O-K Gold Conference rival Middleville Thornapple Kellogg.
The loss dropped the Lady Wildcats’ overall season record to 6-5 and 5-3 in the league.
“The game started well with both teams trading scoring chances and possession at times, but it was the Trojans who made the most of their opportunities and took a 1-0 lead into halftime,” said coach Ben Sleeman. “The home team was unfortunate not to have found the back of the net on a couple of good chances to even the score, but the TK keeper made two big saves to keep her team on top.”
The second half was all TK as the Trojans put shot after shot on target, eventually following up a rebound and scoring their second goal of the match. A third goal not long after and the Wildcats struggled to regain their shape and momentum as the game wound down. Two more goals came late in the match to seal the deal.
Wayland goalkeeper Rachel Wienclaw made 11 saves on the night, bringing her total to 87 saves on the season for an 81% save percentage.
The Lady Wildcats are back in conference action Wednesday night as they travel to take on conference leaders South Christian at 6:45 p.m.
Wayland Saturday morning lost 2-0 to an unbeaten Allegan Tigers’ team.
“Throughout the game, the Wildcat offense found good scoring chances, outshooting the visitors 10 to 5, but we were unable to beat the Tiger keeper,” Sleeman reported.
A goal in each half for the visitors, and the inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities ultimately cost the Wildcats and broke their streak of five straight games without a loss.
Rachel Wienclaw made three saves, facing only five shots on the night.
