Another casualty of the Coronavirus pandemic is that the O-K Gold Conference standings are about as clear as mud.

The Wayland girls’ basketball team is listed by Michigan Sports Radio as leading the league with an 8-1 record. South Christian is pegged at second place with two defeats, one of them at the hands of the Lady Wildcats, 50-32.

Wayland Thursday night beat Cedar Springs 64-51 for the second time this season. The Red Hawks, according to Michigan Sports Radio, sport a 6-4 conference record. South Christian is listed at 7-2.

Grand Rapids Catholic Central, with which Wayland has a makeup road game scheduled for tonight, supposedly is 4-3. The Lady ‘Cats and the Cougars had their matchup postponed last month because of Covid and they are scheduled to meet again March 18.

The Lady Wildcats’ only loss in league play came in an upset 42-37 decision at Forest Hills Eastern, a team reported to have a 4-6 overall record. A parent of a Wayland player insisted the local team was short-handed that night because of the Covid-19 quarantine.

Almost as mysterious as Catholic Central is Middleville Thornapple Kellogg, which Wayland bested 57-50 and which as been very competitive with the top teams in the Gold.

Meanwhile, the Wayland boys’ squad Thursday night earned its second victory this season with a 56-36 triumph over Cedar Springs. The Wildcat boys are 2-9 overall.
