Kayla Reed nails a point in a scene from a match last year.

The Wayland varsity volleyball team members finally got a chance to show their mettle Thursday night in its season opener.

The Lady Wildcats swept always-tough O-K Gold Conference opponent Grand Rapids South Christian in three straight sets, 25-17, 25-22 and 25-23.

Kayla Reed paced the attack with 14 kills, Morgan Fugate added nine and Katy Anderson seven.

Kami Morse came up with 23 digs and two serving aces. Setter Olivia Deeb contributed 23 assists and five serving aces.

“It was an all-around great effort by the players tonight,” said coach Krissy Dill, herself a veteran of many knock-down drag-out battles on the court against the Sailors in bygone years.

The Wayland girls will be at Otsego Saturday.
