The Wayland girls’ varsity tennis team opened its season with a 5-3 nonleague victory at Zeeland West.

The Lady Wildcats and their opponents had to overcome cold and windy weather conditions.

Their greatest succes was in singles, where they swept all four matches. Spanish foreign exchange student Elena Campon won 6-2 in first singles. Rose Bollinger, an all-conference selection a year ago, won by injury default at second. Lilly Bollinger, a second team all-league performer in 2016, cruised to victory at No. 3, 6-1, and Noelle Oman took her opponent by a 6-2 count.

Briget Ballone and Emily Staple, Olivia Fox and Jennie Kerber, and Lisa Mazzeo amd Richarda Zeppa dropped their doubles matches at the first three flights, but  Alli Wnuk and Samantha Burns came through with a clutch 7-6 (10-7) triumph at No. 4.
