The season opener for the Wayland girls’ basketball team was nothing short of a runaway.
The Wildcats blew past visiting NorthPointe Christian, 67-22, taking the game early on the run.
Wayland smothered the Mustangs in the backcourt with a full-court press that resulted in numerous steals, turnovers and multiple 10-second violations at half court. They also were unable to get the ball in bounds to beat the five-second rule.
The Wildcats spread the ball around well, with many fast break points. Laney Wolfe, Marissa Ainsworth and Harmony Laker all came up with multiple steals and Izzy Johnson, Harmony Laker and Dacey Shaffer drilled three-pointers.
Harmony Laker led the scoring parade with 20 points, including a couple of threes. Addie Sikorsky did most of her damage inside the paint and finished with 14 points. Marissa Ainsworth and Lauren Bultsma both contributed eight points.
Interestingly, Charity Laker, the younger sister of Harmony and WHS alum Liberty Laker, scored her first varsity three-pointer.
