The Wayland girls’ soccer team Monday captured its first victory this season in O-K Gold Conference play by turning back Hastings 3-1.
Two unanswered goals by Madelyn Gray, assisted by Brinley Nieuwenhuis, and Lynnsey Hooker, also assisted by Nieuwenhuis, saw the visiting Lady Wildcats take a 2-0 lead into halftime. However, it was the Saxons who struck first in the second half, scoring a goal eight minutes into the start of the second half.
The Wildcats were quick to respond with a goal of their own to put the game out of reach as Emily Gray found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Coach Ben Sleeman calld it, “a great team effort tonight and contributions from each and every player on the team.”
The girls are back in action at home Wednesday as they square off against South Christian at 6:45.
