The Wayland varsity girls’ softball team’s season was concluded Saturday in the regionals with a tough 2-1 loss to Spring Lake.
The Lady Wildcats, who this year won their 24th O-K Gold Conference championship and 10th straight district tournament, completed their season with a 20-7-1. It is indeed rare for any Wayland softball team to register fewer than 20 victories overall in a season.
Senior southpaw Abby Merice suffered the hard-luck loss on the mound in finishing her four-year career for Wayland.
Lauren McCulligh provided the Lady Wildcats with their only run with a solo homer in the fifth inning off junior Leah Vaughan, who was perfect in pitching the other six innings. The Lakers, No. 2 in the state and now undefeated in 40 games, drubbed Holland Christian in the regional finals to move on to the state quarterfinals.
