The Wayland girls’ varsity soccer team opened its season Tuesday evening with a 4-0 victory on its home field over Coopersville.
The Lady Wildcats were nursing a 1-0 lead at intermission and came up with three unanswered goals in the second half.
Breaking into the scoring column for the evening were Madelyn Gray, Brinley Nieuwenhuis, Ashlyn Schafer and Megan Van Hees with one apiece. Schafer, Ali Cutler and Emily Gray contributed one assist apiece.
Goalie Hannah Anderson made a big stop on a penalty kick with five minutes left in the game to preserve the shutout. She finished the evening with five saves.
Wayland dominated possessed of the ball for much of the game.
