The Wayland varsity softball team Thursday split a doubleheader with perennial O-K Gold Conference rival South Christian.
The Lady Wildcats unleaded a boatload of offensive fireworks in the second game to claim a 12-6 victory after bats fell nearly silent in a 3-1 loss in the opener.
Coach Cheri Ritz’s squad ended the day with an overall record of 7-4 and 3-1 in league play.
Leading the offensive attack in the victory were Kennedy Cole, who went 3-4 with a single, double and a triple; Emma Ludema, who was 3-for-5, and Ally Longstreet and Grace Kincaid, who both had two hits in four tries.
But the Lady ‘Cats were limited to six scattered hits in the first game.
Ludema had a single and a walk, Kayla Reed belted a double and Rya VanderKooi, Cole, Longstreet and Emma Tornes had one single apiece.
Wayland is scheduled to play in the Gull Lake Invitational Saturday, weather permitting, and will return to O-K Gold Conference play Tuesday against Forest Hills Eastern.
