The varsity softball team split a doubleheader with Middleville Thornapple Kellogg in its season opener, losing the nightcap, 10-9 after besting the Trojans 10-7 in the opener.
TK came up with a five-run rally in the fifth inning to win the second game.
Lauren McCulligh pitched 5 1/3 innings, gave up eight hits and struck out 4 batters. Abby Merice came in relief and allowed a hit with two strikeouts.
Leading the Wildcats offensively were Kayla Reed, 1-1 with two walks and three RBIs; Meric, 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs; McCulligh, 2-for-4, and
Sydney Urben, 2-4 with a double.
In the season-opening win over TK, Merice pitched a complete game, allowing nine hits and striking out 12 batters.
Leading the Wildcats offensively were Chanlyn Commons, 3-for-4 with two RBIs; McCulligh, 3-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs; Merice, 2-4 with an RBI and Urben, 2-4 with a triple and an RBI.
The Lady Wildcats will compete in the Softball World tournament in Muskegon Saturday.
