The Wayland girls’ basketball team absorbed an upset defeat Friday night at South Christian, losing 54-48.

The Lady Wildcats had a miserable first half, falling behind 27-8 at intermission, failing to score at all in the first quarter. They made a magnificent run in the third and fourth quarters, but came up six points short in the end.

It was Wayland’s first loss in the O-K Gold this season, now at 4-1. South Christian now is 3-2. The Lady ‘Cats are 10-3 overall and likely fell back into a tie for first place in the league with Grand Rapids Catholic Central.

Harmony and Liberty Laker both scored 13 points, with Liberty hitting three threes. Maddy Terry had 10 points, including a couple of threes.

The Wayland boys also suffered defeat, 81-54, at the hands of the Sailors and fell to 2-3 in the O-Gold and 6-3 overall.
