It may have been the battle for the O-K Gold Conference championship, and if true, the Wayland High School softball team is back in the driver’s seat.
The Lady Wildcats swept Middleville Thornapple Kellogg in a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon, 15-4 and 4-1 to improve their league record to 6-0 and their overall record to 13-2. The host Trojans two years earlier broke Wayland’s long string of league championships and this season entered the twin bill with a 9-4 record.
Emma Ludema took the victory on the mound in the opener, striking out nine batters and walking none.
Leading the Wildcats’ offensive attack were Kayla Reed (2-for-3) with a double, Jada Mohon (2-3), Emma Ludema and Emma Tornes had two hits, with a double. Kami Morse, Rya VanderKooi, Grace Kincaid, Oakleigh Hulst and Kylie Mutschler contributed one hit apiece.
Kayla Reed stopped the Trojans in the nightcap, limiting them to just one run and she struck out seven.
Grace Kincaid had two singles, Kennedy Cole had a triple, Kami Morse had a double and Emma Tornes and Kayla Reed had singles.
