The Wayland girls’ varsity cross-country team placed sixth among 14 schools and the boys were 10th among 12 in the Cedar Springs Invitational Saturday.

The Wildcat girls scored 185 team points. Grandville Calvin Christian won it with 33 points and Middleville Thornapple Kellogg was runner-up.

Host Cedar Springs captured first place in the boys’ meet with 34 points and Calvin Christian checked in second. Wayland had 263 points, finishing ahead of Libertas Christian and Wyoming Lee.

Calvin’s Catherine Kortman was the only girl to cross the 5,000-meter finish line in less than 20 minutes, at 19:59.46. Senior Gracie Hasse led the Lady Wildcats in 21:51.96, placing 20th.

Following Hasse were Hannah Smith in 28th, Naomi Oosterhouse 42nd, Serenna VanHouten 44th and Emma Thayer 55th. Freshman Olivia Barabas, customary top Wayland finisher, did not compete.

Senior Ian Russell led the Wayland boys in 19:19.81, good for 39th. Freshman Travis Koon was 49th, Jared Jandernoa 56th, Devin Weaver 68th and Steven Mosher 69th.
