Lady Wildcats take South Christian into OT, but lose 4-2

imgThe Wayland girls’ varsity soccer team took perennial league powerhouse South Christian to two overtime sessions before finally falling 4-2 in a cold, wet Wednesday night match.

The first half ended tied 1-1, thanks to a goal by Ashlyn Schafer, who followed up a free kick from Brinley Nieuwenhuis that hit the cross bar with 11 minutes remaining. The Sailors scored first in the second half to take a 2-1 lead, but again, Schafer came to the rescue when a ball was served into the box by Nieuwenhuis and bounced around before it found the back of the net to tie the game with less than 10 minutes remaining.

“Unfortunately, the Wildcats couldn’t get the ball to bounce their way in the overtime periods and conceded twice to lose the game despite giving their best effort and playing through difficult conditions,” said coach Ben Sleeman.

Junior goalie Paxton Granger made 16 saves on 12 shots in the loss, which brings the Wildcats’ overall record to 3-6-1 (1-3 OK Gold)

The girls will be back in action Saturday at the Comstock Park Invitational, where they will face off against Big Rapids and Comstock Park, and also get a rematch against Zeeland West.
