The Wayland girls’ basketball team defeated O-K Gold Conference rival Wyoming 56-49 Friday evening.
The verdict had to raise more than a few eyebrows, as the Wolves came into the ballgame with an overall record of 7-1 and they beat Caledonia 55-43, a team that bested the ‘Cats in December.
The win improved the Lady Wildcats’ overall season record to 7-3.
Free throws apparently made a big difference. Addie Sikorsky led the individual scoring parade with 21 points, including seven at the charity stripe.Harmony Laker dropped in eight free throws and finished with 16 points. Marissa Ainsworth had 12 points, four coming on free throws.
Strangely, Wayland did not sink one three-point field goal in the contest.
The Wildcat boys’ team, however, dropped a 67-56 decision to Wyoming, falling to 6-4 for the season overall. Wyoming now is 6-5.
Martin girls 50, Delton 27
The Martin girls; basketball team Friday got back on the winning track with a 50-27 victory over Delton. The Lady Clippers were never in trouble, taking 10-4, 26-10 and 33-17 leads at the first three period stops.
“We got back on track tonight with a good team win,” beamed coach Ben Schipper. “We’ve been struggling lately with being in sync with each other on offense. I was very proud of the way we played together tonight. We looked for our teammates and had some good off-ball movement.
“We’ve been stressing moving with urgency and I think the girls saw tonight how those hard cuts or purposeful attacks lead to opportunities. We executed our press very well tonight causing several turnovers and crashed the offensive glass hard, securing 17 offensive rebounds.”
Martin was led by senior captains Avery Jager and Macy Thorne with 15 and 13 points,respectively. Each of them connected on three threes.
“It was great for their confidence to see the ball go through the hoop tonight as we really need their scoring to take off in the heart of our schedule,” the coach added.
Marybeth Ritchie came up with six points, 11 rebounds, six steals, and two blocks. Avery Jager finished with seven rebounds and four steals. Torryn Harris had six points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Clippers now own a 3-5 overall record for the season.
The Martin boys’ squad, however. absorbed a 58-21 defeat at the hands of Delton and saw its overall record slip to 3-7.
