Lady Wildcats win 2 of 3 at invitational in Muskegon

The Wayland varsity softball team won two of three encounters Saturday in the Lakeshore Slam tournament in Muskegon.

The Lady Wildcats posted two shutout victories, 26-0 and 7-0 over Whitehall and Zeeland West, respectively, before being pummeled by a nine-run explosion in one inning by Escanaba in a 9-2 defeat.

Sophomore Madi Ludema had an outstanding day at the plate, crashing three home runs, two in the opening party over Whitehall. She also hurled no-hit ball over three innings in the opener. Carli Mikluisicak was 2-3, with two walks. Kaylee Lown was 2-3, with a double. Reese Veltman had two hits with four RBIs. andIzzy Johnson had a hit. 

Carli Miklusicak tossed the shutout against Zealand West, firing a two-hit gem with nine strikeouts. She helped her own cause with a couple of base hits and Ludema belted a solo homer among her three hits. Reese Veltman, Shelby VanHouten and Raegan Cardosa contributed a hit. 

Escanaba, ranked No. 4 in the state, features pitcher Grayson LaMarche, who is headed to the University of Michigan next fall.

Ludema took the loss, with five strikeouts. Reese Veltman, Lauren Wright, Kaylee Lown and Ludema, all collected one hit. Escanaba scored all of its nine runs in one “big bang” after Wayland had taken a 2-0 lead early.

The Lady Wildcats will take their 2-1 overall record against O-K Gold Conference opponent Cedar Springs Monday.
