The Wayland varsity softball team took two of three encounters at the Gull lake Invitational Saturday, bringing its season record to 5-4.
The Lady Wildcats opened the tournament with an 8-5 loss to state-ranked and eventual tournament champion Mattawan. Abby Merice pitched a complete game in the loss, allowing nine hits and striking out nine.
Leading the Wildcats offensively were Merice, two for two with with a walk; Chloe Coughlin 2-3 with a double and three RBIs and Chanlyn Commons 2-3 with a triple and an RBI.
Wayland came back to defeat Portage Central in the second contest, 6-4. Merice picked up the pitching win with a complete game. She only allowed five hits and stuck out 12 batters.
Merice had a pair of hits offensively, Kayla Reed went 2-4 with two RBIs and Commons was 2-4 with a home run and three RBIs.
The Wildcats edged Anchor Bay 3-2 in their third game. Merice picked up the win in the circle, allowing seven hits and striking out eight.
On offense, Merice went 2-2 with a walk, double, and an RBI Sydney Urben was 2-3 and Lauren McCulligh 1-2 with a double and walk.
The Wildcats, 3-1 in O-K Conference play, will resume league action at home Tuesday against Wyoming.
