MacKenna Bruin beat Forest Hills Eastern’s keeper in overtime to take the lead and give Wayland its third straight girls’ soccer victory, bringing its oversall season record to 4-3 (3-2 in the O-K Gold Conference).

“The Hawks went a girl down after a red card early in the game, which gave the Wildcats a penalty kick,” explained coach Ben Sleeman. “Brinley Nieuwenhuis scored and gave the home team the lead on the penalty kick. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they were unable to capitalize on their many chances and the Hawks capitalized on their chance and scored on a long-distance shot to tie the score.”

The score at halftime remained at 1-1.

It was the Hawks who scored first in the second half on a breakaway to give them the lead. The score would remain that way for most of the half, despite the Wildcats continuing to put pressure on the Hawk defense.

The tying goal of the game came with less than three minutes remaining in the game, as Hannah Henney shot from deep and sneaked the ball under the crossbar to force overtime.

Keeper Rachel Wienclaw made nine saves in the win.

The girls are off for the next few days, but come back home Monday to face East Grand Rapids in another league battle.
