The Wayland girls’ varsity soccer team defeated Hastings 3-1 Wednesday in its last regular season home game of the year completing its season sweep of the Saxons.
The first half saw the Wildcats have plenty of opportunities to score, but just couldn’t find the back of the net. The Saxons took the lead 1-0 as goalie Paxton Granger made a save and the rebound was headed in for the first goal of the game and proving to be the only goal of the first half.
After honoring the seniors at halftime, the girls came out with determination in the second half. Senior Haley Thelen scored four minutes into the half on an assist from fellow senior Ali Cutler. Minutes later, it was Cutler’s turn to score to take the lead as she put her head on a ball from Brinley Nieuwenhuis that snuck into the back post for the second goal of the game. Nieuwenhuis added her own goal late in the game to put the final score at 3-0.
Paxton Granger made 3 saves facing 4 shots in the win.
The verdict brings the girls’ overall record to 7-9-2 on the season (3-5 in the O-K Gold).
The girls wrap up their regular season with two road games next week, Monday at South Christian and Wednesday at Ottawa Hills.
