The Wayland High School varsity softball team opened its season Wednesday afternoon with a 4-1 nonleague victory over Grand Rapids Covenant Christian.
The Lady Wildcats collected seven hits and committed one error.
Freshman Emma Ludema picked up the victory pitching, scattering six hits and striking out six while not allowing one walk.
On the offensive side, Kayla Reed went 2-for-2 and drove home a run with a sacrifice fly. Rya Vanderkooi also came up with two hits and an RBI. Ludema helped her own cause with one hit and a sacrifice bunt.
The Wayland squad, coached again by Cheri Ritz and Nicole Cardosa, features a lot of youth and fresh faces this season.
The Lady Wildcats will not play until after spring break, Tuesday, April 9, at Rockford.
