The Wayland girls’ varsity softball team Tuesday afternoon got some revenge while advancing to the district tournament Saturday on the home field.
The Lady Wildcats defeated Middleville Thornapple Kellogg 5-2 in a pre-district contest to join the Division 2 district tournament with South Christian, Hopkins, Wyoming Kelloggsville and Wyoming Godwin Heights. South Christian defeated Hopkins 11-4 in the other pre-district Tuesday afternoon.
Wayland suffered its only O-K Gold Conference loss this season, 10-9, to TK almost two months ago in the second game of a season-opening doubleheader. The victory Tuesday lifted the Lady ‘Cats overall season record to 16-6-1 and they were 11-1 in league play. Senior southpaw Abby Merice once again picked up the victory on the mound.
The Lady Wildcats will face Kelloggsville at noon Saturday in the district semifinals. South Christian will take on Godwin Heights in the other semifinal at 10 a.m. Saturday. The finals are expected to get under way at 2 p.m.
South Christian promises to pose a serious threat to Wayland’s drive for its 10th consecutive district championship. The Sailors lost twice in an earlier regular season twin bill, but they came to within one run both times.
