League unbeaten Saugatuck sweeps Martin in twin bill

Saugatuck came to MaClipper Logo_6_4rtin undefeated in Southwestern Athletic Conference play Monday and took a pair of baseball games from the Clippers to remain atop the league standings.

Saugatuck took the first game 5-1 and won the nightcap 9-2.

“We just could not come up with the big hit when we needed it,” said Martin Coach Jon Gambee. “I have said all season that if I get good effort from my players I will be happy and I believe they gave good effort in both contests. Saugatuck is just a very good team.

In the first game Garrett Dill started and took the loss, though he pitched well.

“Garrett gave up just three earned runs,” Gambee said. “We need to do a better job defensively.”

Dill led the offense with two hits. Caleb Hunderman and Tanner Curry also had hits for Martin.

In the nightcap, the Clippers managed only two hits, one by Hunderman and a double by Curry.

With the wins, Saugatuck ran its record to 17-5, while Martin slipped to 5-11. Martin will host Fennville in a make-up game Thursday and will play in the Kelloggsville Tournament Saturday.
