Longtime Wayland Unions Schools physical education teacher and cheerleading coach Diane Martus was nominated to be one of the cheer coaches for the annual prep all-star football game last month.

Martus, who coached cheer at Wayland for more than 30 years, also nominated Nahomi Miguel-Garcia, a graduated senior from Wayland and four-year team member, to cheer for the west side team.

The event took place June 23 and 24 at Lawrence Tech University in Southfield.

Cheerleaders and the football players are nominated and chosen by MHSFCA board to play in the Michigan East/West All-Star football game each year.

“It was the greatest honor for me because my dad, Donald R. Smeznik, was chosen to coach the east side football team back in 1986,” Martus said. “I also had the honor of being chosen to be on the MHSFCA Cheerleading board for next year.

“It was the best coaching experience ever,” she added, “especially when you are coaching well seasoned athletes.”

Martus daughter, Ali Martus, was an all-state golfer for Wayland she later was a member of the Northwood University squad.
