Martin boys move to 2-1 in 64-57 win over Saugatuck

The Martin boys’ varsity basketball team Monday night claimed a 64-57 road win at Saugatuck to move its overall season record to 2-1.

The Clippers started fast, taking a huge early lead in the first quarter, 21 to 5 and ended the half up by 17.

“Luckily that proved to be just enough,” coach Brad Moelker said.  “Saugatuck really battled and made some tough plays throughout the second half and kept it close.  The first half things weren’t going their way, but I was definitely impressed at how they took it to us after that.

“This was a great opportunity for us to learn what it means to play a complete game.  We can’t expect teams to just stop playing when they are down at half.”
Collin Coburn paced the Martin attack with 20 points and Charley Martin registered his first double-double with 12 points. Brayden Eckman added 9 points, Mitchell Jager 8 and Gabe Meyers 7.

“Offensively it was nice to see a few new scorers in the book.,” the coach added.”We’ve been pretty top heavy until tonight.  We expect it from Collin and Mitchell every night but our other guys are more than capable.  They just have to learn that for themselves.”

Moelker praised the effort of Cole Altman, who scored six points, “playing his best game of this year.  Its his third game and he is improving each night.
“In the end we will enjoy the win, but it also opened our eyes to some of the things we need to work on.  I know my players want to be a part of a great team and this is just one step.”
